Sports day can sometimes send a shiver down a games teacher’s back. For weeks before the questions start going round their heads: will the weather be ok, is everything going to be set up in time, will the children know where they are meant to be, will I forget the stopwatch, have I packed sun cream? ECS games teachers needn’t have worried about any of this in what was an exceptional sporting week!

We start our weekly sporting look back on Monday afternoon at the county ground. A mixed team of Year 6, 7 and 8 cricketers took on St Edward’s School, a touring team from Cheltenham, in a closely fought match. ECS batted first and posted an impressive target, Alex B top scored with an excellent 41, St Edward’s also batted well in hot conditions and chased the target down, however not before Tom L took 3 wickets, Piers E also took a wicket.

On Wednesday every student from Yr 5-8 travelled to Exeter Arena for sports day, it was a fantastic day with some real stand out performances throughout. Students were a credit to themselves and the school! Having spent the majority of my day on the finish line it was heart-warming to hear children finish races and excitedly congratulate the winner, or to applaud students who finished after them, some excellent displays of sportspersonship.  A huge thank you to all the staff involved in making Sports Day such a success this year, and too all the parents, guardians, family and friends who turned up to watch and support the athletes and create such a lovely atmosphere.

Thursday was the turn of Yr3 and 4 children to have a taste of the sporting action. The U9A and U9B Rounder’s team travelled to The Maynard for a very warm rounders match. Both teams displayed powerful and accurate hitting and some fantastic fielding. Although both teams lost narrowly (by 1 rounder and ½ a rounder) Mrs Ross and Mrs Salter said it was the best rounders performance they have seen from both teams all season and they were incredibly pleased with how well all the girls performed.

On Friday it was the turn of EYFS to have their sports day, it was a lovely morning spent at Exeter Cricket club with children taking part in numerous athletic based activities before have a picnic lunch on the grass. Again thank you to all the staff and parents who made the morning a success and thank you also to the Year 7 helpers who were excellent at running the different stations for the children.

And finally a quick look ahead to next week, on Tuesday 4 ECS students are competing at the National Prep Athletics championships at Alexandra Stadium, Birmingham. Bea O-S, Bella P-J, Bea W and Jack P all qualified for the championships following there outstanding performances at Mount Kelly a couple of weeks ago, we wish them all the best of luck and hope that you really enjoy the experience. On Monday the U10 and U11 rounder’s team are travelling away to St John’s, Sidmouth for a 2pm start (not at Home for a 5.30pm start as per the calendar!). We also have a Tennis fixture against Exeter school and an U11 cricket fixture against Wellington School, another exciting week!

Have a super and sunny weekend,

Mr Kelly
